We got great reviews. Usually they say: “He’s a horrible dictator-type person.” I’m a dictator. But sometimes you need a dictator.
—President Donald Trump, Davos World Economic Forum 2026
The third national wave of No Kings protests in the United States calls upon the public to mobilize against President Donald Trump’s unprecedented assault on domestic democratic institutions and international world order.
Just one year on, Americans are already reeling from his systematic attempt at subverting the government. Among other things: He massively pardoned insurrectionists on his first day in office; undermined the judiciary with intimidation and scandalous nominations such as that of his former defence lawyer; gutted the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division, and turned it into a political retaliation apparatus; muzzled the press with abusive defamation lawsuits; turned Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into an unscrupulous state militia and unleashed it unto racial minorities, massively abducting them, rounding them up in concentration camps, and deporting them even in contempt of judicial orders, such as that those protecting Kilmar Abrego Garcia; condoned violent crackdowns on peaceful protesters and even the extrajudicial killings of Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti; deployed the military on domestic soil and even threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act; and even conspired to undermine the electoral process by disenfranchising millions of voters with the SAVE America Act ahead of the midterm elections—all the while floating the prospect of an unconstitutional third term as President.
Canadian democracy has similarly been under attack, in spite of the public’s acute disapproval of the Trump administration, since the day the president declared his intention to turn the country into America’s “51st state”. The takeover may not come from the US military, but through subversion by Canadian actors sympathetic to the Trump regime, for example leaders behind Alberta’s separatist movement who have recently attended covert meetings with US state department officials. Moreover, the Albertan government has blown into the Trumpian dog whistle of voter fraud to rationalize more stringent voting restrictions with the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act of 2024 and the Election Statutes Amendment Act of 2025.
No Tyrants Victoria enjoins all concerned residents of this city to mobilize this Saturday, to send a message to our policymakers, starting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, that Canada must take a strong stance against the Trump administration’s onslaught on the values we Canadians hold dear. This country is only separated from the United States by an imaginary line on the ground, and its strongest defence against American imperialism is the resilience of its democracy.
